Sedation Dentistry in Encinitas, CA

Sedation Dentistry for Dental AnxietyIf you have anxiety about going to the dentist, you are not alone. In fact, it is incredibly common. According to a Columbia University study, between 15 and 30 percent of Americans experience some degree of dental anxiety. Dental anxiety means that you experience stress, anxiousness, or even avoid the dentist because you fear pain or have had a bad experience. In some cases, it's not clear what the trigger is for the anxiety.

Did you know that no one is born with a fear of the dentist? It is actually a learned behavior. So bringing your children to the dentist at a young age can help them get used to the sights and sounds of the dentist. That way, dental care feels like a normal part of their health care regimen. We always make sure that kids look at their dental appointment like a fun learning experience.

For adults who experience stress when it comes to having dentistry, we offer nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is an incredibly safe and convenient way to relax during your dental treatment. Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask you wear during treatment. We can adjust the levels of sedation with the turn of a valve so that you stay completely comfortable and free from anxiety.

Nitrous oxide enters and leaves your body quickly, so its effects wear off shortly after we stop administering it. This means that you can safely drive home following your appointment.

Most people report feeling relaxed, dreamy, or even euphoric while they receive nitrous oxide. It works well for people with a mild dental anxiety or for kids to help them relax during treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation requires a prescription for medication that you will take one hour prior to your treatment. With oral conscious sedation, you will have a shortened sense of time, feel extremely relaxed and comfortable, and be in a dream-like state. Because it stays in your system longer, you will need to have someone bring you to your appointment and take you home. You should feel normal by the next morning, but you should avoid making decisions, driving, or performing any dangerous activities for the entire day.

We want to keep you safe and healthy, so if you are interested in oral sedation dentistry, we will need to schedule a separate appointment to discuss your medical history and any current medications you could be taking that might interact.

Sedation dentistry helps many of our patients have treatment that they otherwise might put off or avoid due to fears about the dentist. Putting off treatment can be painful and costly.

If you have a large treatment plan and would like to accomplish a lot at each appointment, sedation dentistry can help to keep you comfortable for your longer appointments. Some patients feel so relaxed, they even doze off during treatment.
