If you have a cracked, decayed, or damaged tooth, chances are you are thinking about a dental crown as a potential solution. Dental crowns come in a wide variety of materials and quality, depending on where you seek treatment. Sometimes, the choices can feel overwhelming and making a decision that works best for you can seem difficult. We are here to help!
In general, there are three main different types of dental crowns that we may recommend to repair your damaged tooth.
Ceramic or All-Porcelain Dental Crowns
We offer porcelain or ceramic dental crowns in our Encinitas dental office and they are a popular choice among out patients because of their beauty and durability. Ceramic crowns do not have the dark metal margins that are common with porcelain fused to metal crowns and they will blend in with your natural teeth, so they look like you were born with them.
Pros: Ceramic crowns look great and last a long time.
Cons: Ceramic crowns may not last if you have a teeth grinding habit. We may recommend you wear a nightguard to protect your teeth and dentistry.
Full Gold Crowns
Full gold crowns are a tried and true method of protecting teeth. Because they are made of a somewhat pliable metal, they are more likely to wear away over time than to break or crack when under the force of chewing. For some patients with strong bites or a grinding habit, a full gold crown may provide the longest lasting solution.
Pros: Gold crowns are long lasting and durable.
Cons: They do not look natural.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns
Porcelain fused to metal crowns combine the long lasting nature of metal with the esthetics of porcelain. Your crown will look like your natural tooth because we will custom design your shade to blend in with your smile. Underneath, metal will protect your tooth structure.
Pros: Porcelain crowns are a strong and esthetic option.
Cons: The dark metal margin of the crown is visible and may not be suitable for front teeth.
