Choosing to replace your old, dark fillings is a personal decision. If you have had amalgams for a number of years, you may notice that your entire tooth begins to look a little gray or dark. Some patients find this unappealing and want a more aesthetic solution.

Here Are Some Things to Consider:

Is Your Filling Damaged or Sensitive?

Typically, unless your filling is damaged or you have secondary decay, there is really no practical need to replace your filling. In some instances, you may find that your metal filling feels sensitive to temperature, particularly cold temperatures. This alone may also be annoying enough that you choose to have white fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are made of composite material that does not conduct temperature like amalgams.

Can You Live with the Appearance?

If you don’t like the way your filling looks, we can certainly replace it with a more esthetic version. Composite fillings come in a wide variety of shades that match your teeth.

You May Need a Stronger Restoration

Sometimes when we opt to replace a metal filling, we need to remove a significant amount of the filling to get rid of all of the amalgam inside your tooth. Once this is complete, you may actually need a dental crown instead of a filling. Our dental crowns are highly esthetic as well, and Dr. Jordon will match yours to your natural tooth color.

You May Wish to Whiten Your Teeth First

If you plan on whitening your teeth, consider doing that before proceeding with any restorations. Fillings, crowns, veneers, and bridges do not whiten like natural teeth. Achieving your lightest shade first is preferable.
