Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments

When you think of preventive cavity treatments such as sealants and fluoride, you probably think about your nine year old and not necessarily yourself. What you may not realize is that some people are more susceptible to cavities than others and as you age, you may need to take even more preventive measures to protect your oral health.

As you age, your body changes. Some people suffer from dry mouth, and others have a hard time fighting off gum disease. Based on genetics and hormones, some patients find themselves struggling to keep up even with good home care habits. This goes for cavities, too. A few things can help you stay on top of your oral health and prevent cavities before they start:

More frequent dental cleanings – Just because your insurance company does not cover more than two cleanings a year does not mean that two is sufficient. For some people, their chemistry requires more than the average person. Three or even four dental cleanings per year can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. It all depends on you and your biology. The cost of additional cleanings is relatively low compared to a filling or periodontal treatment.

Fluoride treatment – As we age, we can experience common conditions such as gum recession. This leaves you open to problems such as sensitivity and decay. Adult fluoride varnish can decrease sensitivity, especially at the gum line and keep you from experiencing decay.

Dental sealants – Sealants are a tried and true barrier method to preventing decay. If you have deep grooves in your teeth or have a high sugar diet, sealants can keep bacteria from eating away at the enamel on the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Aging is hard enough without oral health complications. By investing your preventive dental care, you may avoid decay in your later years, leaving your smile healthy and comfortable. Eating and smiling – two of the great joys in life depend on your healthy teeth and gums. Join our dental family at Scott Jordan, DDS, and let us help you keep your smile comfortable and beautiful!
