The Importance of Baby (Primary) Teeth

Many people think of baby teeth as disposable because they eventually fall out and are replaced by permanent adult teeth. When they sustain decay, infection, or fractures due to trauma or dental conditions, parents often ask why it is necessary to preserve the tooth instead of simply removing it.

While baby teeth seem unnecessary, they play an important role in your child’s development and the future of their oral health.

Some of the reasons why baby teeth are important:

Placeholder for permanent teeth – Baby (primary) teeth act as a placeholder, keeping teeth from shifting so that there is enough space when it is time for their permanent teeth come in.

Provide guidance for permanent teeth – Baby teeth provide the path of growth for your child’s permanent teeth. Secondary teeth line up beneath baby teeth and wait in line for their chance to erupt. When baby teeth are lost prematurely, secondary teeth may grow in incorrectly.

Allow for healthy nutrition – Having comfortable teeth is important in eating a varied diet necessary for proper growth and development. Kids with significant decay, painful cavities, or damaged teeth are limited in what they can eat. This makes a healthy diet challenging – something that is often difficult for kids anyway!

Regular dental exams, diagnostic x-rays, and professional cleanings are necessary to keep your child healthy. A small investment in the preventive dental care so important early in life can mean a healthier smile as an adult.

We also provide other preventive treatments:

Sealants – Sealants provide a protective barrier between your child’s teeth and bacteria. We pain them onto your child’s teeth, filling in the deep grooves where decay is most likely to develop.

Fluoride treatments – Fluoride strengthens the enamel that protects your teeth. By having regular fluoride varnish treatments, we can protect your oral health and longevity. Strong enamel resists decay.
