Most people don’t enjoy going to the dentist for even routine cleanings. Yet, there are many people who suffer from dental anxiety. Those who have dental anxiety more than dislike going to the dentist, they avoid it unless it is absolutely necessary, or for some, avoid it completely. Since dental visits are so important to maintaining your oral health, avoiding the dentist can lead to cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. This is why it is important to Dr. Scott Jordan to provide the option of sedation dentistry to his patients.
Sedation Dentistry
One of the most effective ways to treat those with dental anxiety is with sedation dentistry. There are many levels of sedation depending on both your level of anxiety and the treatment you are getting done. Minimal sedation will relax you but you will still be awake and aware of what’s happening, moderate sedation will make it so you barely remember the procedure, and high sedation will put you right on the edge of consciousness, but you can still be awakened easily.
The two main types of sedation used to treat dental anxiety are an inhaled gas, nitrous oxide, and an oral sedation, such as Halcion or Valium. One of the benefits of the nitrous oxide option is that it works quickly and wears off quickly, so you may be able to drive yourself home after your treatment. With the oral sedation, you will be given a prescription and asked to take it an hour before your appointment. It will make you feel drowsy and relaxed, so you will need to have a driver to and from your appointment.
Sedation dentistry, though most often used to help those with dental anxiety, can also be used for other concerns as well. People with a sensitive gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or a low pain tolerance can also benefit from sedation as well. Even children who have anxiety or cannot sit still can be treated under sedation since both forms are safe for them as well.
