Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Are you seeking teeth whitening services in Encinitas? If you want a brighter smile, you are not alone! Since our teeth stain as we age, you can wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and discover that your once bright smile is looking a little drab.

Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, curry, and other colorful foods and drinks can cause your teeth to darken and become brown or yellow with stains. As a society, we value white teeth and the good news is that a bright smile is easier to achieve than ever!

For most healthy patients, professional in-office and take-home whitening systems are completely safe. Patients usually only run into trouble and side-effects when they do not follow the directions properly or become too enthusiastic about whitening their teeth and do it too frequently or use too much teeth whitening gel.

For some patients, wearing whitening trays overnight can lead to sensitivity. If you want to avoid sensitive teeth, it may be beneficial to wear your trays for an hour or more during the day.

Teeth whitening does no damage your teeth. The peroxide solution simply bleaches away stains that have collected. It penetrates beyond just the surface of your teeth (like whitening toothpastes and rinses) and actually bleaches away stains from the pores or your teeth, giving you better results than with over-the-counter products.

Whitening your teeth under the supervision of an experienced dentist will always help you achieve the best results and limit any side effects. If you do have sensitivity, we can help!

Fluoride treatments – Fluoride helps to strengthen your enamel and may reduce the sensitivity you experience when whitening your teeth.

Desensitizing gel – For patients with gum recession or extremely sensitive teeth, desensitizing gels are available. You can use them prior to your whitening treatment to make it more comfortable.

If you do have sensitive teeth, it is important to remember that it is a temporary side effect. You can take over-the-counter pain medication, if necessary and the symptoms should subside within a day or two.
